Journey to Bharatpur
The Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur is an absolute must-visit destination. Originally a dry, rocky area, it was transformed by the rulers of Bharatpur into a duck hunting reserve—where in its early days, as many as 5,000 birds could be hunted in a single day. Today, this park is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and spans approximately 29 square kilometers (11 square miles). It hosts over 300 bird species annually, including the Siberian crane, peregrine falcon, kingfisher, steppe eagle, and various types of storks, herons, and egrets. Visitors can watch these birds gathering on water islands or taking flight dramatically from the woodlands. Keoladeo offers pleasant walking paths alongside wetlands and bushes where birds build their nests. You may explore the park either on foot or by bicycle. The best time to visit Bharatpur is during the winter migration season. This park is a true paradise for bird watchers and photography lovers.
Once a princely state, Bharatpur is also known as the ‘Eastern Gateway of Rajasthan’. Its historic fort, called Lohagarh (Iron Fort), earned a reputation for being nearly invincible due to its clever defensive structures. However, the city gained wider fame from the royal hunting grounds, which have since been transformed into a national park. The Keoladeo Ghana National Park remains an internationally significant biosphere, celebrated for its rich diversity of resident and migratory bird species.
